5. EVALUATION AND MONITORING

5.1       Actual success of afforestation in Jajpur and Ganjam districts of Orissa

As desired by the National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board, the Regional Centre undertook the evaluation of the success of afforestation and planting activities undertaken during 2004-2005 in Jajpur and Ganjam Districts of Orissa. The field study has been completed and the report is under preparation.

 

5.2       First concurrent evaluation of FDA Projects under National Afforestation Programme (NAP) in West Sikkim and South Sikkim districts of Sikkim

As desired by the National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board, the Regional Centre undertook the evaluation of the success of FDA Projects under National Afforestation Programme (NAP) in West Sikkim and South Sikkim districts of Sikkim. Field study has been completed and the report is being finalised.

 

5.3       First concurrent evaluation of FDA projects under National Afforestation Programme (NAP) in Nayagarh and Angul districts of Orissa

As desired by the National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board, the Regional Centre undertook the evaluation of the success of FDA Projects under National Afforestation Programme (NAP) in Nayagarh and Angul districts of Orissa. Field study has been completed and the report is being finalised.

6. AWARENESS RAISING

6.1    Celebration of World Forestry Day

The Regional Centre celebrated the World Forestry Day on 21st March, 2006 by holding a Brain Storming Session on “Conservation of Forest Resources in North-East India: Issues and Challenges”. The Vice-Chancellor, NEHU was the Chief Guest. He chaired the inaugural session. The senior officers of Forest Department of Meghalaya, Regional Office of the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Shillong, faculty members of the Department of Botany, Geography, Centre for Environmental Studies, NEHU, NRM Coordinator, IFAD, Shillong and the research staff of RC-NAEB attended the function. Tree plantation could not be undertaken on the occasion due to unusual dry condition that was prevailing during that period in Shillong.

 

6.2    Video documentary on good work by a JFMC on Jhum development in north-east under NAP

A 13 minutes Documentary film of five minutes duration was on produced with the script relating to the work done by JFMC in Mokokchung District of Nagaland. The film has been submitted to NAEB, Ministry of Environment and Forests.

 

6.3    Publication and distribution of NAP guidelines in three regional languages

The NAP Guidelines will be published in Assamese and Manipuri languages. Translation work has been completed and the manuscript is being finalized for being publication.

 

6.4    Success stories of JFM programme in Tripura

Two success stories of JFM in Tripura have been documented and the draft is being finalized for publication.

7. ANNUAL REPORT

The Annual Report of 2004-2005 has been published and copies have been distributed to all concerned.

 

8. AMC MEETING

The AMC meeting was held on 5th October 2005 and the minutes of the meeting has been sent to all concerned.

 

9. EQUIPMENTS/ACCESSORIES

The order has been placed for the purchase of necessary equipments and accessories.  

  

10. PUBLICATIONS

            Following reports were prepared by the Regional Centre during the year under report:

·          The first concurrent evaluation of FDA projects under National Afforestation Programme (NAP) undertaken in Bankura (S) FDA, West Bengal.

·          Actual success of afforestation and tree planting activities undertaken during 2003-2004 in Birbhum District of West Bengal.

·          Actual success of afforestation and tree planting activities undertaken during 2003-2004 in Burdwan District of West Bengal.

·          Medicinal plants of north-east India and their conservation strategies.

·          Sacred Groves of Meghalaya: A scientific and conservation perspective.

·          Coal mining in mining: An environmental perspective.
